Amazingly a lot of people don’t know the difference between dry skin & dehydrated skin!! Winter is a particular challenging time of year as we bounce between cold and heated environments, we wrap up well and stay indoors more.
Dry skin is caused by lack of nutrients (think about scurvy skin), not drinking enough water and a poor diet. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamins is really a guide and most nutritionists think we should be double that, certainly as far as our essential fatty acids are concerned we should either supplement or eat oily fish 4 times per week. Essential fatty acids moisturize the skin from the inside out – I personally take 2000 mg of a good quality omega 3,6 & 9. I often get asked if Cod liver oil is just as good, so lets reverse it the oil from the liver of a cod!!! I know which one I would rather swallow! There is a massive difference in the quality of vitamins, I liken it to you can buying bread in the supermarket – in one shop a loaf for 20p from another shop £2.20 and we all know the difference is vast, the same goes for your vitamins.
Most skins are dehydrated at one time or another can be something as simple as too much wine or a long haul flight but you need to be aware Dehydrated skin can be more sensitive and reactive; it feels tight and uncomfortable and also shows the signs of ageing more as we lose essential moisture and volume and therefore shows wrinkles more!
We need more Hyaluronic Acid to naturally occur in the skin. Topical application of Lactic Acid actively increases the amount of Hyaluronic Acid in the epidermis and dermis so that you can retain more of your natural moisture, causing immediate and hydration and volume. My favorite at the moment is the Environ Revival mask a mix of Asiatic, lactic & Mandelic acid scientifically proven to trigger growth factors to rejuvenate & hydrate the skin.
A combination of both these will allow your moisturizer to work much more efficiently and repair barrier function to prevent further water loss. Go on give it a try and let me know what you think.
