It is not your imagination Stress really does affect your skin!!! It can literally be written all over your face!! Stress causes a chemical response in your body that makes skin more sensitive and reactive, stress is a recognised trigger to redness, itching, burning and flare ups. Have you ever noticed that when you are stressed, you break out more? This is because stress causes your body to produce cortisol and other hormones, which tells your sebaceous glands to produce more oil. Stress also depletes the nutrients in the body making it harder for skin problems to heal.
Stress can cause flare ups of, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, and acne. Plus if you are overcome with stress you might neglect your skin ie not cleanse properly and this can make the problem worse!! Some people are so embarrassed by their skin that they hide away, or wear scarves to cover half the face leading to cross contamination from scarf to face this can cause breakouts & blackheads………
6 Tips on caring for Stressed Skin
- Make time for your skin, develop a great routine, make this your 5 minutes!
- Get at least 7/8 hours sleep a day.
- Take up yoga or meditation.
- Feed your skin from within, ie good diet or supplements.
- Drink plenty water, or eat water rich foods.
- Look at the cause of stress and if need be chat to either a friend or professional.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is also important to skin care. Any lifestyle habit that promotes free radicals—such as smoking, excessive exercise and poor dietary habits—creates inflammation and accelerates the aging process. Tobacco smoke has been shown to decrease capillary and blood flow, and may harm the fibroblasts in connective tissues necessary for plump skin. As a result, cigarette smoke expedites the aging process, creating wrinkles, and alters the overall framework of skin.
So make time for your self and caring for your skin a priority in your life!!!
